The Utrecht city poet Ingmar Heytze describes Utrecht as 'the largest small city in the Netherlands'. A striking description: Utrecht does not have the international allure and the many tourists of Amsterdam, but is still big and lively enough to never get bored. With its 70,000 students, Utrecht is the largest student city in the Netherlands.
Utrecht is also increasingly being discovered by international media and travel magazines. Lonely Planet mentions Utrecht as 'One of the World's 10 Unsung Places', CNN calls Utrecht 'New Amsterdam' (a title not every 'Utrechter' is equally proud of) and according to BBC Travel, the city is even one of the five 'Happiest Places to Live'.
Most of the sights in Utrecht are located within the borders of the historic city center. From our short stay apartments and studios, these hotspots can therefore be reached by foot. Think of the iconic Dom tower (Domtoren), the canals (ie. the Oudegracht) and the many museums in the city center such as the Central Museum.
There is also much to see and discover outside the city center. Use our bike rental service to visit for example the Railway Museum, the iconic Rietveld Schröder House or the ancient castle De Haar. If you prefer to spend a day shopping, you do not have to get bored. Utrecht is known for its wide range of big and small shops and of course for one of the largest indoor shopping centers in the Netherlands: Hoog Catharijne.
A short stay in Utrecht is not complete without a visit to one of the many terraces, restaurants and coffee bars in the city. You can find these on Neude square, on the water-level wharfs of the Oudegracht or at Ledig Erf square. Of course it is also possible to have your dinner or lunch arranged by us in your short stay apartment.
Tip: between the Oudegracht and the Vredenburg square, your will find a narrow street called Drieharingstraat. This alley is so inconspicuous that you probably miss it when you first walk past it, but in recent years the street has been transformed into a hidden gem with all sorts of different restaurants.
Fancy a night out after dinner? In the five concert halls of Tivoli Vredenburg, all types of music are covered. In addition, there are all sorts of smaller pop venues, cinemas, cocktail bars and clubs in the city.
In short: will you be living Utrecht as an expat, are you looking for a temporary stay in the Netherlands or are you looking for a short stay apartment for an extensive city trip? Your short stay in Utrecht starts with an apartment or studio from Utrecht City Apartments.
